Dr Aleksander Szram was born in Southampton of Polish parents and studied piano at the then Trinity College of Music at both undergraduate and masters level. He completed his DMA in piano and composition at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada before returning to teach at his alma mater. As a pianist, Aleksander has performed in over forty countries across five continents and is particularly interested in contemporary repertoire. He has given first performances of works by Rzewski, Gregson, Fujikura and Smalley among others, and recorded for many labels including Nimbus and MMC. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority and has guest-lectured at many institutions worldwide. His current research projects include commissioning repertoire for the new Seaboard instrument, and exploring how Freirean pedagogies can be used in the conservatoire environment.
