The course was broad, and I could choose from a range of modules. Dance practice remained central, but this also opened my eyes to different ways of seeing and thinking. For me, it helped expand the horizons of dance as a field.

Biography

Sanjoy Roy graduated in 1989 after completing a Diploma in Dance Studies. He then worked at Dance Books until 2000, editing, designing and producing their books, and co-editing Dance Now magazine. As a freelance dance writer and critic, Sanjoy has written for the Guardian since 2002, and has contributed to the New Statesman, Dance Gazette, Dancing Times, Pulse and other publications. From 2008-2011 he wrote the Guardian’s popular Step by Step Guides on dance companies and choreographers, and in 2014 was invited as Guest Editor for the Dance Umbrella Definite Article series. Sanjoy has taught at universities and dance festivals, and has been on the jury of the The Place Prize (London), the PECDA choreography award (India) and the Premio Equilibrio (Rome).
