Podiatry
Appointments
No GP referral is needed for an appointment. Standard
appointments are 30 minutes. Longer treatment sessions and
biomechanical assessments last between 45 minutes and 1 hour,
depending on the problem. This can be discussed when you make your
appointment.
What is podiatry?
Podiatry/chiropody involves the prevention, diagnosis and
treatment of diseases and disorders of the feet and lower limbs.
Podiatrists help prevent and correct deformity, keep people mobile
and active, help relieve pain and treat infections of the skin and
nails.
Podiatry Services offered
Podiatry can address common foot/leg problems including:
- forefoot pain
- heel pain
- foot/ankle tendinopathies
- calluses (hard skin)
- problem toenails
- warts (verrucae)
- fungal infections of the nails and skin
Standard 30 minute podiatry appointments are recommended for:
corn removal; hard skin removal; nailcutting; problem toenails;
fungal infections of the nails and skin; and verrucae
treatment/follow-ups.
Biomechanical assessments are recommended for: musculoskeletal
issues and required before orthoses (devices worn in footwear which
influence foot function) can be dispensed. Foot structure and foot
posture; hypermobility; musculoskeletal strength of the lower limb;
and gait are taken into account, amongst other factors
assessed.
Diabetic foot assessments can be carried out, and include: full
medical history and medications review, vascular assessment,
neurological testing, plus written report for GP.
What happens at a podiatry appointment?
At your first appointment the podiatrist will take a detailed
medical history, together with full details of the problem, and
will carry out a physical examination. On this basis a treatment
plan will be suggested and discussed, and treatment and/or advice
will usually be given.
Please bring with you:
- your usual footwear (including your usual dance and street
shoes)
- any orthotics/insoles you have been prescribed by a
clinician
- full details (e.g. a copy of your prescription list), if you
take any prescription medication
For all appointments, please remove any toenail polish before
you arrive, because full assessment includes an examination of the
toenails.
The podiatrist will need to see your lower legs, knees, hips,
spine and torso clearly for assessment, so suitable clothing (such
as shorts) that allows this should be worn.
NB Podiatry instruments used during treatments are sterile,
single-use, and are new for each patient.
