13-16? Got to Dance? Trinity Laban's CAT Wants You!
27 January 2011

Are you 13-16 years old and passionate about dance? Can your
moves rival Justin Bieber, Diversity or Strictly's finest? It
doesn't matter how much experience you've had, if you love dancing
and are interested in becoming a professional dancer, Trinity Laban
in Deptford wants you! The leading dance conservatoire is looking
for enthusiastic young dancers of all abilities to join its Centre
of Advanced Training (CAT), which offers top quality training to
those with exceptional talent and potential in dance.
Trinity Laban's CAT is part of a national programme funded by the
Department for Education's Music and Dance Scheme, and students
come from all walks of life. They work with top dance teachers and
choreographers in weekly classes on Saturdays and one evening a
week in term time, as well as taking part in special projects
during the holidays. They study different types of dance from
contemporary to ballet, choreography to health and fitness, and
students have opportunities to perform, go to dance performances
and receive careers advice. Previous projects have included
showcases at big name venues like the Southbank Centre and Sadler's
Wells.
CAT students also take part in workshops and performance projects
with well-known dance companies and choreographers. From September
2011, CAT students will work with the critically-acclaimed Nigel
Charnock, Sarah Linstra, Freddy Opoku-Addaie and Wayne McGregor |
Random Dance. Trinity Laban's CAT team is always keen to encourage
more boys and young men to get involved in dance and the programme
includes activities just for boys.
CAT training has proved so beneficial that 95% of graduates who
have auditioned for further training have been offered places at
leading dance training institutions including Trinity Laban, London
Contemporary Dance School, Northern School of Contemporary Dance
and Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary. Each CAT student has
an Individual Training Plan devised in consultation with their
parents/carers and a teacher to help make sure that they get the
right balance between school work, dance studies and other areas of
their life.
Attending a free Open Day is the best way to find out if CAT is the
right choice for you. The team is recruiting for entry in September
2011, and Open Days take place in late March 2011
followed by auditions (applicants can attend auditions without
visiting an open day). Open Days include a practical dance class
and an opportunity for parents and carers to find out more.

Financial support is available for every CAT student on a means
tested basis and Trinity Laban bursaries are also available due to
generous support from The Leverhulme Trust.
Trinity Laban's CAT Programme Manager Martin Collins says, "Passion
is the key to success so if you have bags of enthusiasm for dance
get in touch and start dancing! It really doesn't matter how much
experience you've had, some people join CAT having never taken
dance classes before, and leave with a place at one of the
country's top training institutions. CAT is designed to give
budding dancers a foot up in the industry, and young people travel
from all over London and the country to join - we have students
from as far afield as Kent, Southampton and Essex."
