Arts Council England offers Greenwich Dance and Trinity Laban partnership £1,140,230 funding for 2012 –15
31 March 2011
Plans for Greenwich Dance and Trinity Laban to work in
collaboration won the approval of Arts Council England, who has
offered grants of £366,000 (2012/13), £375,000(2013/14), £399,230
(2014/15) for 2015. The new partnership represents an exciting
opportunity to redraw the dance map of London and expand the
cultural offer in a traditionally under-resourced part of the
capital.
The proposal is to refocus and align two of London's key dance
organisations to create a dynamic single programme that will
deliver world-class support for artists, present a vibrant
programme of performances and events as well as setting a new
benchmark for access and engagement.
Greenwich Dance Chairman, Peter Conway described the Arts
Council grant as, "a sound endorsement for the future partnership
with Trinity Laban and for our plans for the future. Whilst
the grant offered falls short of our full bid to the Arts Council,
the funding offered represents an exciting opportunity for both
organisations in a difficult financial climate. Greenwich
Dance has long enjoyed a productive relationship with our
neighbours Trinity Laban and now looks forward with confidence to
sharing resources while maintaining our individuality and our very
distinct identity. Together we will ensure that dance plays a
leading role during the Olympic celebrations next year and South
East London becomes an international centre for top quality dance
performance and participation."
Trinity Laban Chairman, Sir Robert Scott said: "Trinity Laban
and Greenwich Dance have worked closely for many years and we are
delighted that Arts Council England has acknowledged both the
tremendous work we are doing in South East London and also the
enormous potential of a more formal partnership between the two
organisations. Trinity Laban was formed by the merger of
contemporary dance centre Laban and Trinity College of Music in
2005 and collaboration is very much at the heart of what we
do. This partnership with Greenwich Dance will be of huge
benefit to our undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as
to our local communities and the dance sector as a whole."
Detailed plans will now be developed to enable the two
organisations to share a far-reaching community and education
programme in the boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham, and to
continue to present cutting edge professional performances in two
very different venues, the iconic 1930's Borough Hall and the ultra
contemporary Laban building.
