Top London Jazz award for Trinity Laban musician

Leading European saxophonist and jazz tutor at the Trinity Laban
Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Julian Siegel, has won the London
Jazz Award for Art and Performance 2011. Announced by the London
Festival Fringe, the award recognises the talent and dedication of
singers and instrumentalists working in and visiting the city.
Julian won the judges' vote for his latest album,Urban Theme
Park: "Julian Siegel simply exudes class and thoughtful elegance.
It might be all too easy to overlook such an un-gimmicky figure -
but Siegel...has gained his place at the centre of UK jazz by sheer
talent and musicianship.Urban Theme Parkis a polished, subtle but
engagingly vigorous piece of work." (Chris Parker, London Jazz)
Simon Purcell, Head of the Jazz Department at Trinity Laban,
said: "Julian is a deserving winner of this award, because it
recognises his skill as a great improviser, and also because of his
outstanding role as a major artistic voice in this city and
beyond."
Julian has established himself as a powerful player and
individual writer on the flourishing UK and European jazz Scene,
and awards include the 2007 BBC Jazz Award for Best
Instrumentalist.
His current bands include the Julian Siegel Quartet, featuring
Liam Noble, which released Urban Theme Park this year; the
influential jazz group Partisans; the Julian Siegel Trio with Joey
Baron and Greg Cohen; and Oren Marshall's Charming Transport Band,
featuring musicians from Ghana, Nigeria and London. His varied
musical life has included performances with Hermeto Pascoal, Norma
Winstone, Kenny Wheeler, Django Bates, Andrew Hill and Laurie
Anderson.
