Trinity Laban graduate Ayanna Witter-Johnson has been chosen to perform in the finals of Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in Harlem on 27 October 2010 and could win $10, 000.
The singer-cellist, who achieved a first class BA honours in music, is also a former resident Southbank Centre artist and has had her compositions performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. Clearly no stranger to the limelight, Ayanna hopes to take the States by storm and secure the $10, 000 prize on offer.
Amateur Night has been running since 1934 promoting the music of aspiring African-American and Latino artists, and has seen the likes of Billie Holliday, James Brown, Sarah Vaughan and a 15 year old Ella Fitzgerald grace its stage. The Theater, on 125th street, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and has received a state and landmark description in recognition of its cultural significance to the cultivation of artists and genres in America.
