Jazz student sings with award winning film composer in Rome

Renato Paris

Jazz vocal student Renato Paris performed with award winning composer Nicola Piovani at the Gucci Sales Conference in Rome on 24 January 2015. Piovani won an Oscar in 1998 for his score for the multi award-winning Life is Beautiful [La vita è bella].

Performing to guests around the world, Renato sang Piovani’s songs, including Life is Beautiful, jazz standards, popular hits and some original pieces.

Renato says: “Performing alongside Piovani was an amazing experience. As a child, I would hear my father whistling the melody of La vita è bella, and I never thought that all these years later I'd be singing that same song with the composer himself.”

Currently in his first year at Trinity Laban, Renato has performed at a variety of events and venues, including the London Jazz Festival, Trafalgar Square for the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech, 606 Jazz Club and the Wigmore Hall, and with leading jazz musicians such as Julian Joseph and Soweto Kinch.

Renato and the seven other musicians who accompanied him in Rome are all Gucci Scholars at the World Heartbeat Music Academy. The scholarship enables musicians to take part in exciting musical ventures, such as attending the Grammys Camp in LA.

Trinity Laban is home to one of the largest Jazz Departments in the UK, and many Trinity Laban graduates become regular features on the UK jazz scene. Recently, alumni and students have won the British Jazz Awards, the Nottingham International Jazz Piano Festival and the Worshipful Company of Musicians’ 2014 Young Jazz Musician Award.
