Made Kuti follows in grandfather’s footsteps

Made Kuti with his father, Femi Kuti

Made Kuti, grandson of Afrobeat creator Fela Kuti, is currently a student at his grandfather’s Alma Mater, Trinity Laban.

Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Made is a 1st year student on the BMus composition course. Taking Afrobeat as his main influence, Made is keen to develop his compositional voice and approach Afrobeat in a unique way.

Made says: “Being at Trinity Laban makes me realise how lucky I am to be here. I came to expand my knowledge of music and now I’m learning things which I never thought I’d be doing.

“It’s also great to see my ideas welcomed by my teacher. When he sees my work, rather than correcting me and telling me what to do, he hones and develops the ideas I have.”

Made adds: “Studying where my grandfather studied, for other people, makes them very happy as they see it as a legacy. For me it’s great because I want to know what he learnt whilst studying here.”

Made’s grandfather, Fela Kuti, is regarded as one of the most influential figures in African history and a leading light in the Afrobeat genre. He enrolled on the composition and trumpet performance course at what was then Trinity College of Music (now Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance) in 1958. Taking influence from local Nigerian dance music (known as highlife), jazz and soul, he formed his first band, Koola Lobitos, in 1961 and became a regular feature on the London music scene. Kuti later formed the legendary band Africa ’70 after becoming heavily influenced by the Black Power movement in America and produced an astonishing seventy albums, most of which had a strong political agenda. Made’s father, Femi Kuti, is also an accomplished Afrobeat musician and, like Fela, has been commited to social and political causes throughout his career.

Studying at Trinity Laban is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a buzzing and vibrant community. With students from over 60 countries currently studying at Trinity Laban, the conservatoire has a culturally diverse atmosphere, with international student support services available throughout the year.
