Trinity Laban alumnus and Honorary Fellow Matthew Bourne appears in this year's Top 100 list produced by The Stage for his contribution to opera and dance. The annual list details the most influential individuals from the theatre and performing arts industry.
Matthew created and became artistic director of his first company Adventures in Motion Pictures while studying dance at the then Laban Centre. Matthew graduated in 1985 and then toured with Trinity Laban's Transitions Dance Company for a year.
Adventures in Motion Pictures became one of the UK's most innovative and popular dance companies, creating an enormous new audience for dance with its groundbreaking work both at home and internationally. In 2002 Matthew established New Adventures, "…the busiest ballet company on earth and turned Britain into the world's leading exporter of dance theatre." (Spectator).
Bourne himself commented on the New Adventures website as to why he has endured while other sparky contemporaries have faded away. "What I've discovered over the years is that it's 50% talent and 50% having a business mind. Or having the right people around you, and not just being an 'artist'." Working unpaid and calling in favours are the staple of young dance companies. "That's not making a living. How long can you go on like that for? That's where they drop." You won't survive, he insists, without understanding budgets or marketing - or hiring someone who does. "I've seen people with a touch of genius, but they have no idea what they're doing on that side of things."
