Sir John Tavener

The Board of Governors, staff and students at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance were very sorry to learn of the recent death of Sir John Tavener, the internationally acclaimed composer.

Sir John was a member of our teaching staff, in our pre merger days when the Faculty of Music was Trinity College of Music.

He taught composition and harmony to generations of aspirational  students, who benefited greatly from his classically derived but deeply spiritual style of composition. Sir John was deeply influenced by, and reflected in all of his compositions, the religious music of all cultures from around the Globe.

Although Sir John retired from Trinity College of Music, on health grounds, some years ago, his influence is still alive and well in our inspirational department of Composition.

Our staff and students are very much aware of and open to the contemporary influences and styles of the modern age and, like Sir John Tavener, keen to develop their own individual voices through which to portray, in music, their experience and reaction to the world in which we live.

We are proud that Sir John Tavener was a member of our community and are confident that his wonderful legacy of compositions will live on for centuries to come.
