The Olympic Torch comes to Trinity Laban

On Monday 23 July at 7.31am, the Olympic Torch Relay set off
from the Laban Building of Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and
Dance in Creekside at the start of its journey through Lewisham.
Residents from all over the borough joined us to farewell the
Olympic Flame as it headed off on its journey around South East
London.
Over 550 people were on the Laban Building's lawns to watch this
historic event, including members of the Animate Orchestra, dancers
from the Centre for Advanced Training and Trinity Laban's Summer
School participants - and thousands of local residents watched from
the perimeter of the site. Other guests included Sir Steve Bullock,
the Mayor of Lewisham, and Jay Osgerby, designer of the Olympic
torch and local resident.
The dynamic and exciting London Sound Painting Orchestra
entertained the crowds from 6.30am; this was followed by
professional trumpeter Rob Willson playing a 30 second fanfare by
Gottfried Reiche to introduce the lighting of the torch.
Passing many local landmarks including the new Deptford Lounge,
the Stephen Lawrence Centre, Lewisham's clock tower and the
Broadway Theatre, Trinity Laban students, guests and staff joined
in the excitement of the Relay and celebrated the achievements of
the Torchbearers.
The complete London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay route can be
viewed in full at London 2012 - Olympic Torch Relay, with
street-by-street details and proposed start times. Residents living
in the borough of Lewisham can find out when it will be travelling
near them.
The Principal of Trinity Laban, Professor Anthony Bowne, said
the Conservatoire was honoured to be taking part in London 2012
history: "Trinity Laban is a world class conservatoire for
music and contemporary dance students - but we are also deeply
proud of our Deptford roots and our work with the local community,
going back over ten years.
"We also have key Olympic links, as our Stirling award
winning Laban dance building was designed by Herzog and de Meuron,
who designed Beijing's Birds Nest Olympic Stadium."
Lewisham Councillor Chris Best, Cabinet Member for Community
Services, celebrated the announcement outside Trinity Laban's dance
building: "We are so pleased that Lewisham residents will
have this great opportunity to be part of such a fantastic
spectacle. Telling everyone the route today means there is lots of
time for people to hold community celebrations along the route as
we welcome the Flame and support the amazing Torchbearers on their
journey."
Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG, said: "We are thrilled to
confirm that Lewisham will act as a host location for the Olympic
Flame on Monday 23 July, extending an invitation to people across
the borough to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay during its journey
around the UK. This is the UK's moment to shine and I want to
encourage people across Lewisham to start planning how they can be
part of this once in a lifetime opportunity and show their support
for the inspirational Torchbearers chosen to carry the Olympic
Flame as we count down to the start of the Olympic Games."
