Congratulations to Gill Clarke MBE, a renowned choreographer and member of Trinity Laban's dance faculty, who was awarded The Jane Attenborough Dance UK Industry Award on 24 January. The award was presented at the Critic's Circle National Dance Awards held at Sadler's Wells and was accepted by choreographer Siobhan Davies on her behalf.
The award recognises individuals who have made an outstanding contribution and have had a significant impact on dance. The open nomination process means that Gill was chosen as a highly influential figure by members of the dance community. Her generosity, skill and consistent support has inspired endless choreographers and dancers as she stands as a positive advocate for independent dance artists.
Gill is a founding member of the Siobhan Davies Dance Company and has had an extensive teaching, choreographing and performing career.
In her award acceptance letter Gill says, "I would like to accept the award on behalf of Independent Dance Artists - that powerful and under-acknowledged workforce that is made up of all those artists who work in the demanding freedom outside the relative security of institutions. These multi-talented artists are vital to the Dance ecology...and new choreographic forms in media and contexts that we cannot yet imagine."
Choreographer Rosemary Lee says: "No one has so selflessly, intelligently and creatively done more to support dance and practitioners in the last decade."
