Internationally acclaimed dancer, choreographer and teacher Kerry Nicholls is the new artistic director for National Youth Dance Wales (NYDW).
Since graduating from Trinity Laban, Kerry has become known as one of Britain’s foremost contemporary technique teachers, working with leading dance organisations such as Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, the Michael Clark Company, Ballet Preljocaj (France), Escela De Danza (Cuba) and the Beijing Dance Academy (China). As a choreographer, Kerry has created numerous works for her own company k|n|d|c (Kerry Nicholls Dance Company) and received commissions from across Europe, China, and the USA.
Kerry said: “It's such an honour to have been offered the role of Artistic Director for National Youth Dance Wales for 2014-15. It's an exciting opportunity for me to hone potential, work in a sustained way and deliver a training programme of excellence for young Welsh dancers. I am excited to see the impact of my experience in terms of the technical standard, creative skill and personal confidence of the new dancers that I will share with. I am hoping to provide strong foundations to kick start young careers and inspire home grown talent. I can't wait to start.”
Trinity Laban Principal, Anthony Bowne, said: “Kerry is a prime example of the great careers our alumni are achieving. She will now take a leading role in determining the future of dance in Wales.”
One of Kerry’s first roles will be to steer the NYDW’s Step Up programme, a dance initiative aimed towards 14-18 year old dancers.
NYDW was set up in 2000 to provide first class training and performance opportunities for young dancers. Since its inception, the company has worked with acclaimed artists such as Wayne McGregor, Henri Ogiuke and Theo Clinkard.
