Horn player Stephen Stirling and harpist Gabriella Dall'Olio will be playing with the Hebrides Ensemble and Synergy Vocals at the Edinburgh International Festival in August, in the world premiere of a James MacMillan piece, "Since it was the Day of Preparation..."
The performance takes place at Greyfriars Kirk on 22 August and then comes to King's Place in London on 29 September, before touring Amsterdam and Leeds and then returning to Perth in Scotland in 2013.
As well as being recognised as one of the country's leading composers, James MacMillan has continually demonstrated his commitment to sacred music. "Since it was the Day of Preparation..." tells the story of The Resurrection, and follows on from MacMillan's setting of The St John Passion, which takes the narrative up to the death of Christ.
"Since it was the Day of Preparation..." is scored for a small chamber ensemble and singers, with just five instrumentalists and five singers. Throughout the piece, MacMillan writes interludes where each of the five instrumentalists will have solo moments of real virtuosity.
