Bulgarian soprano Nellie Petrova has become the vocalist at the new five-star Ritz-Carlton in Abu Dhabi. Nellie will perform for guests four nights a week in public areas of the Ritz.
Nellie studied at a music college in her native Bulgaria and then with acclaimed Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballé in Andorra. In 2003 she held a Fellowship in Voice Performance at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance (then Trinity College of Music).
Since graduating, Nellie's eclectic career as a freelance singer and actress has taken her from singing in operas and recitals across Europe to band collaborations, commercials and fashion shows. One highlight involved working on Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol alongside Tom Cruise. She also teaches voice and piano for Trinity Guildhall.
Nellie loves living and working in the United Arab Emirates, although maintaining her voice in the hot climate proved quite a challenge at first.
"This is such an elegant venue to perform in," she said. "When I saw how grand it was, it felt magical and I knew I wanted to do it.
"For me it is not important that not everybody is silent. We are breaking the stereotype of a sit down concert, and I choose music suitable for the venue and view in front of me - anything from Puccini and Verdi to Andrew Lloyd Webber."
