Hagit Yakira's dazzling new work, …in the middle with you is just one of seven UK contemporary dance premieres coming to Laban Theatre and the Greenwich Dance & Trinity Laban Partnership this autumn.
Yakira, a Trinity Laban alumnus, has been selected to feature her new work at British Dance Edition in Glasgow on 1 Feb 2014. British Dance Edition also features Ordinary Courage by Theo Clinkard, the Resident Artist at Greenwich Dance
First up this season is the Lustrum Showcase at Greenwich Dance, on Fri 8 Nov.
Presented by the Greenwich Dance & Trinity Laban Partnership, this performance showcases the aftermath of Lustrum, a six day project for fifteen choreographers and dancers led by the award-winning Gary Clarke. Pioneered by Merseyside Dance Initiative, Lustrum brings together 15 dance artists to devise, create and showcase five dance works (a solo, a duet, a trio, a quartet and a quintet) in five days; a fast and furious collaborative project driven by creative instinct and quickfire choices.
Using chance to dictate outcomes, participants will switch between the roles of choreographer and performer from day to day, experimenting with the generation of material and creation of performance work in a spontaneous, non-critical way.
Lustrum offers a unique opportunity for a team of experienced artists to meet, network, exchange ideas, enrich and develop both choreographic and performance skills and experience staging an evening of professional work in a very short time frame. The evening will also include work by regional artists as well as a post-show discussion forum with Gary Clarke and the Lustrum artists.
On 21 Nov comes Yakira's exciting, playful and emotive live performance, …in the middle with you, which poetically combines dance, music and text. The five dancers share real life scenarios, stories and relationships, as they struggle with their need to love, survive, stop, lose, fear and fall, and their endless commitment to face the surreal, impossible and mundane reality.
This sophisticated and intimate work explores the varying dynamics of human relationships, shifting between drama and humour through well-considered structures.
…in the middle with you is a production co-commissioned by The Greenwich Dance & Trinity Laban Partnership, and is supported by Arts Council England and Independent Dance. It will tour from autumn 2013 to spring 2014.
Freddie Opoku-Addaie brings Show of Hands to Laban Theatre on Thu 26 Nov.
Show of Hands is a new solo choreographed and performed by Opoku-Addaie, directed and scored by Graeme Miller, and overlooked by a mass of wooden carved hands. Dodging obstacles and provocations, ducking and diving, dancing on shadows, rising to an unknown task and driven to the final whistle, Opoku-Addaie enacts this witty and personal work.
With an inquisitive team of collaborators, Opoku-Addaie addresses preconceptions and challenges what it means to be part of a contemporary urban generation.
