The Greenwich Dance & Trinity Laban Partnership is presenting Divercity at The Borough Hall on 5 April, an event designed for young people which has been planned, programmed and devised by a steering group of five 18 - 25 year olds.
Inspired by Greenwich Dance's trademark cabarets, the evening is a 'pick and mix' of dance, music, circus and comedy designed for audiences aged 13 and above. Each piece has been handpicked by the group of budding young programmers, with the aim of taking the audience on a journey through the diverse city.
Compered by Hakeem Onibudo, there will by talented young performers alongside professional artists including contemporary dance group Cathy Waller Company, multi-award winning dance and popping artist Dickson Mbi, Hip Hop and spoken word artist Maxwell Golden and Fully Functioning Individuals, Impact Dance's flagship hip hop theatre company of young people aged 14-20.
Steering group members Jenny Arrowsmith (14), Xavier Bailey (15), Joshua Dickinson (15), Zoe Moody (20) and Jannick Moth (22) have been responsible for everything from naming the event and designing the flyers to choosing the layout of the space and selecting the artists to perform. In the process they have had the opportunity to work with key members of the Greenwich Dance and Trinity Laban teams, such as artistic programmers and technicians, and to attend theatre visits to see artists' work and to understand how an event is staged.
Melanie Precious, Project Manager at Greenwich Dance said: "It is a tremendously exciting opportunity to work alongside a group of such thoughtful and creative individuals. Their contributions have so far surprised, challenged and inspired me and I am thoroughly enjoying the journey of discovery as we piece together an event I am sure many other young people will enjoy."
As part of the project, two young choreographers, Lee Griffiths and Hannah Pickett have been selected to create new work with Greenwich Dance's NRgXtra, an afterschool club at St Ursula's School in West Greenwich and Laban's contemporary dance youth group. Both groups will perform at theDivercityevent.
A dynamic partnership has been created by Greenwich Dance & Trinity Laban to provide ground-breaking dance performance, bespoke support for dance artists and an all-embracing programme of community and education work across South East London. The Partnership attracts National Portfolio funding from Arts Council England.
