Music Departments

Every music student at Trinity Laban joins one of our seven departments, each of which encompasses an exceptional array of eminent teaching staff, visiting artists and mentor ensembles. Your experiences with them will form the core of your learning: regular individual tuition, group lessons and masterclasses supplemented by a wide range of specialist classes to help you develop your repertoire knowledge, technical skills and musicianship.
Your instrumenta/vocal/composition teacher at Trinity Laban is
an artist whose rich array of professional experiences will provide
you with a perspective on the music profession that will enrich and
enable your future career. Your teacher will act as your guide and
mentor, providing invaluable insights into the profession and
confidence-building advice along the way. You will also have many
opportunities to benefit from the specialist knowledge of teaching
staff across all other departments.
Each department contains students who are following a range of
different programmes of study (undergraduate, taught postgraduate,
FPS or research degree). Departmental classes allow you to learn
alongside other students in your area (strings, winds, musical
theatre, etc) following a range of different courses
(undergraduate, postgraduate, etc), developing your repertoire
knowledge and technical skills, as well as providing you with
opportunities to perform in a workshop setting.
You will also undertake more general classes and performance
activities where you will work with musicians studying at the same
level as you, but across a range of different disciplines. This
intermixing contributes to Trinity Laban's renowned friendly and
supportive atmosphere and encourages our students to learn from one
another. Key components include strands examining the Informed
Performer, Healthy Musician, Teaching Techniques and Engaging
Audiences.
All students are actively involved in chamber music, forming
their own ensembles (for which substantial coaching is available),
performing in Trinity Laban ensembles, or commissioning groups to
perform their works. Leading conductors, coaches and ensemble
directors regularly work with our many larger ensembles and a wide
range of exciting performance opportunities, in both formal and
site-specific settings, are available.
