Susan Milan was a Junior Exhibitioner and Scholar at the Royal College of Music, where she studied with John Francis. As a post graduate of the Guildhall School of Music she studied with Geoffrey Gilbert, as well as attending the Marcel Moyse masterclasses in Switzerland. From 1968-1972 she was principal flute of the Bournemouth Sinfonietta, andfrom 1974-1982 of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, before developing her solo career from 1982. She tours worldwide as soloist and recitalist, and runs an annual masterclass course in Surrey.
She has given numerous world and UK premieres and has inspired contemporary composers to write for her, among them Richard Rodney Bennett, Antal Dorati, Carl Davis, Jindrich Feld, Edwin Roxburgh, Robert Saxton, Ole Schmidt, and Robert Simpson and Cecilia McDowall. She can be heard regularly on BBC radio and has recorded for Chandos, Upbeat, Da Capo, Omega, Denon, Cala and Metier labels. Ensemble work includes the London Chamber Music Group, The Debussy Ensemble and a recital duo with Ian Brown.
Qualifications / Educational Background
From 1963 to 1967, Susan was a scholar of the Royal College of Music, graduating with honours.
In 1967, she was awarded a Countess of Munster Scholarship to study as a Post Graduate under Geoffrey Gilbert at the Guildhall School of Music.
From 1990-1995 she was president of the British Flute Society.
She is a Fellowship of the Royal College of Music, which was presented to her by HRH Prince Charles in November, 1999.
Susan was appointed Professor of Flute at the Royal College of Music in 1984.
In 2007, she was appointed Adjunct Professor of Music at Henan University, China,
She has given Master Classes in Australia (Adelaide); Germany (Berlin); China, (Beijing and Hong Kong); Germany (Weikersheim); Italy (Naples); Japan (Nagoya and Tokyo); Slovenia; South Africa; South Korea (Seoul); Spain; Switzerland (Ticino Festival); the UK (Charterhouse, Jackdaws and West Dean); and the US.
Susan has researched and published 19th century repertoire for Boosey & Hawkes. She has also published several technical books, including two technical scale books in 2000, and a handbook of programme notes. She is presently restoring acollection of historic recordings of flautists from 1910-1945 for issue on the Master Classics label.
