Biography

Alan Baker has been a piccolo specialist in a career spanning over forty years of orchestral experience. While still a student at the Royal College of Music, he discovered the need for particular skills in the successful performance of the piccolo repertoire, adapting and refining flute technique, discovering new aspects and insights, and incorporating these during his studies until 1970, and then subsequently, as a freelance player. Gaining valuable advice and experience while working with all of the London Orchestras, Alan was frequently asked to play piccolo, a source of some satisfaction at the appreciation of his affinity with the instrument. In 1982, he joined the orchestra of English National Opera where he later became principal piccolo, equally at home in the operatic and symphonic repertoires.

Teaching Experience

In 1997, Alan was invited to join Trinity College of Music staff as specialist piccolo professor, and enjoys passing on a wealth of knowledge and experience to flute students keen on a professional playing career. He also takes orchestral coaching and teaches flute at the Royal College of Music Junior Department.
