Biography

Michael Enscot (formerly Michael Pipe) is especially interested in the history of music theatre and has made a particular study of the opera scene in France in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. January 2005 he was invited to lecture on Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as part of the education programme. He was invited back in May to talk about Rossini’s Il Turco in Italia and made further visits in December 2005, and January and February, 2006.

Qualifications / Educational Background

Michael was awarded a University of London BMus from Goldsmiths College in 1976 and was immediately invited to lecture there.

Teaching Experience

In 1987 he started lecturing at Trinity College of Music but continued to be a visiting tutor at Goldsmiths until 2005. Between 1993 and 2004 he was Course Director for the London University External BMus. Michael Pipe now has nearly 30 years experience of lecturing and examining at degree level. His academic interests are wide. In fact, if asked what he can teach, the reply would be 'Everything, except a musical instrument'. He is primarily a music historian, but as a teacher of Contextual Studies at Trinity he especially enjoys the chance to link historical and cultural study to musical analysis and stylistic awareness through pastiche composition.

Creative Outputs

Michael frequently writes programme notes and has also broadcast on Radio 3. In 2004 he made his directing debut with the Intimate Opera Club in South East London, producing Act 2 of The Magic Flute. This has led to further invitations to direct, including Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana (Opera Nova) and Act 2 of Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld (Intimate Opera Club) for which he has prepared a new English translation.
Michael also has a passion for the music of Sir Arthur Sullivan and his big labour of love is a book on this subject.
