About Transitions Dance Company
Transitions Dance Company brings together the world's
most exciting choreographers with exceptional young dancers. The
Company is respected for the consistent quality of its
choreography, production and performers. By commissioning new work
from outstanding choreographers and recruiting dancers emerging
onto the international dance scene, Transitions Dance Company
continues to contribute to the explosive field of contemporary
dance.
Transitions Dance Company tours every year from February
- May to national and international venues. For two decades
the Company has entertained and delighted audiences from Aberdeen
to Austria, Jersey to Japan and Manchester to Malaysia with a
programme of short dance pieces, and 2012 will be no exception.
Transitions is the original conservatoire dance company,
created to help emerging artists bridge formal training and
their entry to the professional world. The Company is based at
the lottery-funded Laban building at Deptford Creekside, designed
by Herzog & de Meuron, the architects behind Tate Modern.
Transitions Dance Company was founded in 1982 by Bonnie Bird
(1914-1995) who was Artistic Director until her death. Bonnie Bird
was one of the original members of the Martha Graham Dance Company
and became the first official teacher of the Graham technique - her
pupils included Merce Cunningham. The Bonnie Bird Choreography Fund
was established in 1985 to support and promote innovative
choreographers in Britain, Europe and America.
Members of Transitions Dance Company have gone on to work with
companies such as Michael Clark, Dynion, Tavaziva,
Featherstonehaughs, T.r.a.s.h, Adventures in Motion Pictures, New
Adventures, Akram Khan Company, Siobhan Davies Dance Company, DV8
Physical Theatre, Rambert Dance Company, Random Dance Company and
The Cholmondeleys.
