John Summers graduated from Trinity College of Music, now Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in 1975, studying cello. After graduating John worked as a freelance cellist with the Northern Sinfonia, he then moved into administration and management for a number of years and became Chief Executive Officer of the Sinfonia in 1992. From 1999 until his retirement in 2020 he was Chief Executive of the Hallé Orchestra. John has held many governance positions including board member of the Association of British Orchestras, Honorary President of the Lakeland Sinfonia, Governor for the Royal Northern School of Music and he was Lead Adviser for Music to the Arts Council of England.
