We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Alan Grieve CBE, Chair of the Jerwood Foundation, and a towering figure in the UK arts landscape.
Since establishing the Jerwood Foundation in 1977, Alan was instrumental in granting over £113 million in capital and project funding across the UK. His strategic insight and unwavering advocacy helped secure the futures of many leading organisations, including the Royal Court Theatre, London, and DanceEast, Ipswich. More recently, he oversaw the unification of the two Jerwood charities into a single, future-facing foundation—an enduring legacy of cohesion and clarity of mission.
At Trinity Laban, we are profoundly grateful for Alan’s generous support. His leadership was key to the Foundation’s gift of £1.2 million to establish the Jerwood Library of the Performing Arts at King Charles Court—one of only 18 high-profile capital projects supported by Jerwood Capital Projects across the UK. More recently, his support enabled transformative work with our string ensemble, including The Protecting Veil, and the appointment of Raphael Wallfisch as Visiting International Chair—initiatives that would not have been possible without his vision.
Anthony Bowne, Principal of Trinity Laban said: “Alan Grieve was a visionary whose unwavering commitment to the arts transformed lives and institutions alike. At Trinity Laban, we are proud to have been among the many beneficiaries of his purposeful generosity, which created lasting opportunities and helped shape the future of our field.”
We extend our deepest condolences to Alan’s family, friends, and all at the Jerwood Foundation. His legacy will continue to inspire and enrich generations to come.
