Having arrived in the UK from Brazil in 1996 with very little experience of formal dance training or indeed of living abroad, but with a real conviction that dance was what I looked for as a future career, Trinity Laban provided me with a solid structure and the training that I needed as well as the space to begin to understand my own choreographic voice.
Jean Abreu
Biography
Jean Abreu graduated in 1999 with a Diploma in Dance Theatre. Since graduating he has choreographed his own work, receiving the Jerwood Choreography Award in 2003 and founding Jean Abreu Dance in 2009.
His work has toured throughout the UK, Europe and Brazil and includes performances for Dance Umbrella, the Royal Opera House and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Jean has also choreographed for theatre including the Young Vic’s Amazonia and The Red Room’s Oikos and Protozoa and received commissions from the South Bank Centre and the Horniman Museum. For his work BLOOD, Jean was given permission by artists Gilbert and George to use images from their works to create a visual backdrop and for A Thread he collaborated with Brazilian sculptor and visual artist Elisa Bracher.
Jean has been an Associate Artist at The Place, Swindon Dance, South Hill Park and the Hat Factory and an Artist-in-Residence at Dance East.
