All prospective students for the Main Programme take an audition with the Head of Children’s and Young People’s Programmes and an instrumental/vocal specialist.

Auditions usually take place in March and April for entry the following September. Occasionally there are opportunities to audition in May half term or later, subject to availability.

Closing date for September 2018 applications is 1 March 2018

Applicants are expected to be at least Grade 5 standard or equivalent on their first study instrument.

The audition includes:

  • Performance of two contrasting pieces on first study
  • Performance of one piece on second study - if appropriate
  • Scales and arpeggios on first study appropriate to the applicant's current standard
  • Aural tests
  • Sight-reading
  • Extemporisation (applicants are not expected to have prior experience)

A significant part of the audition involves conversation. We want to know about you, your musical experiences to date, and your future aspirations.

Please note that auditions are not required for the String Time Programme.

"I found the audition so relaxing and professional; it was a wonderful experience."
