The Laban Building is in New York
Thu 7 February 2019A collection of material relating to the construction of Trinity Laban’s iconic Laban Building has been donated to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York by Herzog & de Meuron.
In total, the Swiss architects have gifted 23 carefully selected physical objects and digital assets – including sketches, models, photographs and videos – relating to nine of their major projects that have been described as “key works of contemporary architectural production” by Martino Stierli, The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at MoMA.
Purpose built as a centre for contemporary dance training, the Laban Building houses a 300-seat theatre, a 100-seat studio theatre, 12 dance studios, as well as Europe’s largest dance library and archive, and a performing arts health suite. Herzog & de Meuron worked in collaboration with artist Michael Craig-Martin to create the innovative space situated on a two-acre site beside Deptford Creek in South East London. The building that opened to great acclaim in 2003, and was awarded the RIBA Stirling Prize for Architecture the following year.
The Laban Building continues to create a powerful, highly visible focus for the ongoing physical and social regeneration of the area and is an integral part of Trinity Laban: London’s Creative Conservatoire.
