Dave Holland invites Trinity Laban quartet to perform at inaugural International Jazz Day showcase

Tue 24 April 2018

Jazz musicians from Trinity Laban will perform at one of the UK’s premier jazz clubs on Monday 30 April at the invitation of celebrated bass player and bandleader Dave Holland.

The Michael Shrimpling Quartet will appear at London’s Vortex Jazz Club in an International Jazz Day showcase of top student talent, enabled by Holland’s new fund for talented young artists.

Double bass player Michael will perform with Joe Elliott (Saxophones), George Melton (guitar/effects) and William Cleasby (drums). With a collective passion for the free jazz tradition pioneered by Ornette Coleman, the band’s set is inspired by the great composers of this broad and exciting jazz lineage.

Hans Koller, Head of Jazz at Trinity Laban, says –

“The jazz community at Trinity Laban is really excited and honoured to be involved with this project. We have chosen a group led by double bassist Michael Shrimpling to represent us. Michael has recently led a wonderful Ornette Coleman project, composes his own highly original music, and is deeply connected to the improvisatory spirit and explorative attitude of jazz new and old.

“I think that jazz education can only come alive and develop in the interaction of ‘the street and the school’. The Vortex plays a vital part in the process of everybody’s learning.”

The Vortex Jazz Club is one of the UK’s premier jazz venues, programming almost 400 performances a year in an intimate space. The volunteer-led space in Dalston was named by Downbeat magazine as one the top 150 jazz venues in the world.

Dave Holland, in partnership with saxophonist Evan Parker recently held a fundraiser at the Vortex. The proceeds have enabled them to start a new fund to present special events that give a platform to developing talent. They intend the student showcase on 30 April to become a regular event, giving audiences the chance to hear young jazz musicians present their vision for the genre’s future.

Tickets for The Shape of Jazz to Come: Aubin Vanns Trio +1 & Michael Shrimpling Quartet at Vortex Jazz Club are £10 / £5 concessions and available via ticketweb
