Trinity Laban alumnus named ‘One to Watch’ in 2018

Thu 15 February 2018

Rising-star jazz saxophonist Nubya Garcia singled out by The Guardian.

Following the sell-out of her EP Nubya’s 5ive last year and the recent release of collaborative album We Out Here, tenor saxophonist Nubya Garcia – who graduated from Trinity Laban in 2016 – has been dubbed the ‘stand-out’ in the free-spirited and forward-thinking London jazz scene.

Writing in The Guardian, Kate Hutchinson describes Garcia’s compositions as ‘glowing with Afro-futurist touches, chill Baduizm and self-assurance’ and praises the musician’s ‘effortlessness’ as well as her trailblazing in being one of the few twentysomething women to wield a saxophone. Despite her brilliance, Garcia still gets mistaken for a vocalist.

Hutchinson concludes –

‘Watch out for Garcia in 2018: she doesn’t sing but she soars.’
