Cabaret, the first musical theatre showcase of the academic year, proved to be a huge hit with critics, with Michael Holland describing it as “an absolute joy” in The Weekender.

Commenting on the show, which took place on 7-8 December 2018, Michael Holland said –

“If this is the cream of the crop at Trinity Laban then the world of musical theatre has much to look forward to. Their full-on, non-stop, energy-filled production of Cabaret was an absolute joy and the standing ovation at the end was very much deserved.”

Set in a Berlin nightclub as the 1920’s drew to a close, Cabaret explored the dark, heady and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yielded to the emerging Third Reich.

William Russell praised many of the cast members in Reviews Gate –

“The Emcee Barney Fritz … had great style and soared through his cynical songs to the banner born. … Jenny Coates as Sally sparkled bravely and conveyed just how silly she really is, turning a blind eye to the world outside the one in which she is having the time of her life.”

Meanwhile, in View from the Cheap Seat, Shanine Salmon wrote –

“This production from Trinity Laban is engaging, with a charismatic Jake Lomas as the Emcee linking this difficult book. … The music and lyrics are strong … and the cast was more than up to it vocally. … This winter showcase production proves that the future of British Musical Theatre and beyond is in a good place”.

Echoing the sentiment of many reviews, The Blog of Theatre Things concluded –

“There was little to set this apart from a professional performance… [offering] a valuable opportunity to see a cast of exciting new talent, who I’ve no doubt will go on to own plenty much larger stages in the future.”
