Biography

Versatile keyboard player, repetiteur and conductor Richard Gowers has studied at the Mendelssohn Conservatoire, Leipzig, the University of Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music. A former organ scholar of King’s College, Cambridge, he has frequently been heard on BBC radio and television. His solo recitals have included venues in Australia, the United States and across Europe, and his recent debut album release of Olivier Messiaen’s La Nativité du Seigneur was made Album of the Month by MusicWeb International. He has premiered the music of several leading composers, including Nico Muhly’s cycle The Lenten Gospels.

As a pianist he has won prizes for song accompaniment and chamber music, and is active in the world of opera. Richard has performed extensively as a pianist and organist with leading orchestras that include the Aurora Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonia, and as a continuo player with the Academy of Ancient Music, Hanover Band, King’s Consort and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Richard became a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists at the age of 17 and won the Northern Ireland International Organ Competition in 2013. He currently serves as organist of the Old Royal Naval College Chapel and teaches undergraduate Music at the University of Cambridge, combining these commitments with a busy and varied freelance career.
