"I found the audition so relaxing and professional; it was a wonderful experience." - current Junior Trinity student
All prospective students for the Main Programme take an audition with the Head of Children’s and Young People’s Programmes and an instrumental/vocal specialist. Auditions usually take place in March and April for entry in the following September. Occasionally, there are opportunities to audition in May half term or later, subject to availability.
The audition includes:
- Performance of two contrasting pieces on first study
- Performance of one piece on second study - if appropriate
- Scales and arpeggios on first study appropriate to the applicant's current standard
- Aural tests
A significant part of the audition involves conversation. We want to know about you, your musical experiences to date, and your future aspirations.
Applicants are expected to be at least Grade 5 standard or equivalent on their first study instrument.
However, there are many factors, including the instrument played and whether students have received formal musical training, that also inform the audition panel. Places at Junior Trinity are limited and being of the right standard alone is not a guarantee of acceptance to the department.
Please note that auditions are not required for the String Time Programme.
The audition fee is £35 and can be paid via our online shop. Please note that the audition fee is non-refundable.
