Following studies at the Royal Academy of Music, where he won numerous prizes and awards and was recently elected an Associate, Andrew Matthews-Owen partners many of today’s leading singers and instrumentalists.
Recent and forthcoming performances include appearances and BBC Radio 3 broadcasts at Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall, St John’s Smith Square, Kings Place, Warehouse and the National Portrait Gallery with singers Patricia Bardon, Susan Bickley, Claire Booth, Anne Sophie Duprels, Helen Field, Gail Pearson, Natalya Romaniw, Nicky Spence and Sir Willard White. He has also appeared in recital with French horn player Richard Watkins, percussionist Joby Burgess and the Allegri and Brodowski string quartets.
Andrew has a passionate commitment to contemporary music. He has commissioned and given first performances of scores by Michael Berkeley, Charlotte Bray, Philip Cashian, Laurence Crane, Jonathan Dove, Alun Hoddinott, Simon Holt and Arlene Sierra. Forthcoming premieres including performances and recordings of new works by Joseph Phibbs, Jonathan Dove, Augusta Read Thomas and Hannah Kendall.
Andrew’s discography includes award winning recordings by Jonathan Dove (Naxos), Alun Hoddinott (Naxos), Charlotte Bray (NMC) which have been Editor’s Choice (Gramophone magazine) and The Times ‘Top 100 CDs of the Year’. Forthcoming recordings are a solo disc of new works and a song recital disc of Debussy and Satie.
