Biography

Alan Garner holds the unusual distinction of having held full-time posts in all three roles within the orchestral oboe section: after studying at the Royal College of Music with Peter Graeme and Michael Winfield, he joined the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra as Second Oboe, and later moved across the city to become Principal Oboe with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera. Returning south of the border, he was appointed Principal Cor Anglais with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 2002, the post he currently holds.

As well as appearing with most of the UK orchestras, he is an experienced chamber musician and has given recitals both on BBC Radio Scotland and Radio 3. He has given classes and adjudications at several leading institutions such as the Royal College of Music, Guildhall, the Royal Academy of Music and Welsh College of Music, and was Professor of Oboe at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) for several years.
