Born in Hexham, Northumberland in 1944, Dave began his career playing rhythm and blues in the Newcastle area. In 1967, he moved to Leeds and gained a diploma in jazz studies while studying with Peter Ind and Bernie Cash. In 1971, after moving to London Dave became established on the local scene. During 1976-1977 he toured Holland, Denmark, Italy and the UK with the Lee Konitz-Warne Marsh Quintet. The following year Dave toured the UK with Soprano Summit (Kenny Davern and Bob Wilber). Dave has appeared frequently at Ronnie Scotts jazz club in varied settings including Georgie Fame's Blue Flames, Mike Carr Trio, Irene Reid, Dick Pearce Sextet and the Bruce Admas Quartet. In 1998 Dave won the BT Jazz Awards in the guitar category. Dave played at Lee Konitz’s 75th birthday concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. In addition Dave was featured with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra at the Barbican with Wynton Marsalis and Bob Wilber playing the music of Benny Goodman. Dave has accompanied many prominent jazz artists including Lanny Morgan, Slide Hampton, Herb Geller, Harry Allen, Buddy Childers, Nina Simone, Lew Tabackin, Mundell Lowe, Bucky Pizzarelli, Jack McDuff, Lockjaw Davis, Richie Cole, Barbara Dennerlein, Ken Peplowski, Salena Jones and Kenny Wheeler. Dave currently plays with some of the younger horn players in London including the Allison Neale Quartet, the Luke Annesly Quartet and the Gary Kavanagh Quartet as well as some other freelance playing.

Teaching Experience

Dave is involved in Jazz education, teaching jazz guitar at Trinity College of Music & Birmingham Conservatoire. He also teaches at the Glamorgan Summer jazz school & The Jamie Aebersold Summer School in London.
