We provide opportunities for girls and young women to develop jazz skills and technique through fun and informal workshops and masterclasses. Participants work alongside professional jazz musicians and students from Trinity Laban, perform as part of an ensemble, share new musical ideas, give peer-to-peer feedback and receive helpful support and advice on their playing.
In July 2016, we piloted two jazz workshops:
A Taste of Jazz, for girls aged 11 - 16, provided an interactive day of jazz exploration and playing with professional jazz musician Amy Baldwin and students from Trinity Laban. Throughout the workshop, participants developed their improvisation skills, explored jazz influences in carnival music and learnt about some the great and inspiring women in jazz today. Participants also made new friends and were able to explore some of the practice rooms and performance spaces at the conservatoire.
Young Women in Jazz, for female musicians aged 16+, offered a more intensive opportunity to experience what it's like to study jazz at conservatoire level. Participants worked alongside Trinity Laban jazz tutor and professional musician Andrea Vicary, as well as jazz students, to improve their jazz technique, gain peer-to-peer feedback and perform as an ensemble. Participants also took part in an informal Q&A with Head of Jazz, Simon Purcell, and played to an audience at the end of their workshop.
I'm interested! When are the next jazz workshops?
Our 2017 jazz workshops and masterclasses for girls and young women are currently in development. We anticipate further details will be available later in the academic year, and the best place to find this information will be here on this web page.
If you have any questions about these opportunities in the meantime, please contact Joanna Freeman on [email protected].
You can also fill in a form to let us know you're interested, and we'll contact you once more information about the next jazz workshops becomes available.
