Embedding Dance and Drama in SEND Teacher Practice

Moving Stories is a two year project taking place in and with 4 Lewisham Primary Special Schools and 2 Resource Bases from Autumn 2023-Summer 2025.

Drama Practitioners from Peoplescape Theatre and Dance Artists from Trinity Laban are working together with 12 Teachers to explore how arts-based approaches can support teaching and learning and develops pupils’ communication skills.

The project began with Artists leading practical sessions in Schools, sharing best practice, with reflection time with Teachers.  As Teachers develop their knowledge and confidence over time the model shifts to co-delivery, with Teachers and Artists planning and leading together, culminating in Teacher-led sessions, with Artists in role as mentors.

Through Moving Stories, Teachers and artists will learn from each other and share good practice with colleagues and the sector, embedding drama and dance in SEND settings and ensuring young people with special needs have access to a rich and exciting arts curriculum that supports their life skills.

Moving Stories is delivered in partnership with Peoplescape Theatre and Lewisham Education Arts Network.

The Moving Stories project is one of only 6 projects nationwide to have been awarded funding by the Paul Hamlyn Teacher Development Fund, Round 6.
