Thea Cramp

Biography

Thea was born and educated in Pembrokeshire, studying the flute with Roger Armstrong from the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra. For three consecutive years she won the flute competition at the Pembrokeshire Amoco Instrumental Music Festival, and during this time played in the televised premiere of William Mathias’ setting of six Shakespearean Songs. She went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Richard Taylor of the London Symphony orchestra, receiving an award from the Welsh Arts Council for advanced study in music and two awards from the Ryan Davies Memorial Fund.

Her solo career includes numerous recitals in her native Wales and London area, recordings, concertos and performances in the Royal Albert Hall. For ten years Thea performed extensively as part of a duo with pianist Jeremy Brown. In 1998 she formed Syrinx, a duo for flute and piano, working with pianists Roger Munns and David Darby.  Thea has premiered several works for flute and piano including Contrast by the Welsh composer Cyril Lloyd and Pavane and Siciliano by Reginald Vidler. She has been on tour to Belgium with Vox Mundi, performing with them in the premiere of Ken Paige’s Song Cycle, To the Virgins, to make Much of Time, for choir, flute and piano.

As well as teaching at Trinity Laban Junior Department, Thea teaches flute and chamber music at Eton College.
