For the past few years, Trinity Laban has offered a hugely popular day-long event of practical workshops exploring and playing jazz, aimed at young female musicians.
Aimed at 11 – 25 year old female musicians – instrumentalists and vocalists – wanting to develop their understanding of the music, and to get an intensive taste of learning jazz at one of the UK’s top conservatoires.
On Thursday 25 June 2020, our annual Young Women in Jazz Day took place remotely. Across the day participants took part in 3 online sessions facilitated by world-class teachers and musicians from Trinity Laban and beyond. Participants were able to connect up with other young female musicians online and gain lots of practical advice and inspiration along the way.
As part of this year’s event, we hosted ‘The Jazz Chat’. Participants were able to ask questions to an expert panel, who were chatting live. This year’s panel featured Janine Irons, Annie Whitehead, Andrea Vicary, Dee Byrne, Cherise Adams-Burnett, Sheila Maurice-Grey, and TL Jazz student Gabrielle Carberry. The panel discussed pathways into becoming a professional jazz artist, how they kept motivated and built their skills during lockdown, what it’s like studying jazz in a conservatoire, and the challenges for female musicians.

Are you a young musician aged 11-16, and at an early stage in your musical development? Trinity Laban and Tomorrow’s Warriors are joining forces on an exciting new project for 11-16 year old musicians from a variety of backgrounds who are curious about jazz. The Jazz Hang starts with a series of free taster sessions, leading into regular sessions of informal and practical jazz learning.
