The Jazz Hang with Tomorrow's Warriors

Event details

The London Jazz Scene is on fire, with artists and Trinity Laban alumni like Mercury Prize-winners Ezra Collective, Nubya Garcia and Moses Boyd tearing it up at festivals and on TV, and performing around the world.

The Jazz Hang – delivered in partnership with Tomorrow’s Warriors and Lewisham Music – is aimed at all young musicians interested in Jazz and wanting to learn more about it. Over the past 6 years, over 600 young musicians have taken part in the programme. For many it’s been a completely transformative experience, going on to coveted places on the Tomorrow’s Warriors Young Artist Development Programme at the Southbank Centre, and for a few, into professional music training at Trinity Laban. Every young musician that we have witnessed flourish, credits the free access they were given with their success.

We are now recruiting for a new and FREE weekly series of after-school jazz tuition starting in September 2026, based at Lewisham Music. and are on the lookout for young musicians – aged 11–16 – wanting to develop their musicianship, join with like-minded players, and grow amazing ensemble sounds towards performance opportunities.

No prior jazz knowledge is needed but students must have:

  • A willingness to learn, a passion for music and an interest in jazz
  • Knowledge of where the notes are on their instrument
  • An ability to produce a clear tone (if they are wind/brass players)
  • An understanding of basic time signatures (e.g. 3/4 or 4/4)
  • A basic understanding of major and minor scales

We particularly welcome applications from Global Majority young people, female musicians, and lower income families. Priority will be given to students in Year 7 -10, and local to Lewisham.

Apply now, and you can sign-up for a 90 minute Taster Session, taking place at 10.30am on Sunday 28 June.

We have been blown away by the jazz hang opportunities, both musical and social, it has been a really positive experience for her, and we are very thankful.

– Parent of 2024/25 participant

It felt like the teachers really wanted us to do well, encouraging me to take part in improv without any anxiety of doing anything wrong. I really appreciated this.

– 2025 Masterclass participant

Participants in weekly sessions will also be invited to take part in occasional Masterclass days at Trinity Laban, alongside other young musicians interested in jazz, with workshops aimed at all levels of experience. At these events, you’ll also get to hear some fantastic performances and take part in jam sessions.
