Nubya Garcia 

A leading voice in the resurgence of UK jazz, Nubya Garcia stands at the forefront of a generation redefining the sound and scope of the genre. A tenor saxophonist, composer and bandleader, her work reflects the breadth of London’s musical identity, drawing together influences from jazz tradition, Afro-Caribbean heritage, dub, soul and contemporary electronic forms into a distinctive sound.  

Raised in Camden and immersed in music from an early age, Garcia’s development was shaped by the same grassroots ecosystems that have underpinned the wider UK jazz renaissance. Youth music programmes, community initiatives and collaborative spaces provided both training and opportunity. She went on to study at Trinity Laban, graduating in Jazz Performance and joining a cohort of musicians, such as Femi Koleoso, Joe Armon-Jones, Cassie Kinoshi, Moses Boyd and many others, who would come to define a new era in British music.  

As both a bandleader and collaborator, she has contributed to a movement that has brought jazz to new audiences. Her acclaimed debut album Source (2020) offered a panoramic reflection of this landscape, weaving together diverse influences into a cohesive and deeply personal statement rooted in identity, history and community. Her later work, including Odyssey (2024), continues this trajectory, embracing scale, experimentation and orchestral ambition.  

Garcia’s live performances have come to symbolise the energy and intent of this new generation. Reviewing a performance at Village Underground, The Guardian described her as “a serious, uncompromising tenor saxophonist,” whose music resists convention while building intensity through carefully shaped, evolving forms. Her work exemplifies a broader shift towards a distinctly British approach to jazz – one that is confident in its influences yet unconstrained by tradition. 

Alongside her artistic achievements, Garcia remains a committed advocate for music education and access. As a patron of Camden Music Trust and an active participant in community-focused initiatives, she continues to champion the importance of youth provision, mentorship and inclusive creative spaces.
