Our iconic Laban Building is being celebrated as part of the 30th anniversary of the RIBA Stirling Prize, with members of the public invited to vote for their favourite Stirling Prize-winning project from the award’s distinguished history.
For three decades, the RIBA Stirling Prize has recognised the buildings that have made the most significant contribution to British architecture. Widely regarded as the UK’s foremost architectural award, the prize has championed projects that have shaped the built environment and influenced how people live, work, learn and create. To mark its 30th anniversary, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has launched an interactive Awards Map that brings together all previous winners and shortlisted projects, inviting the public to explore three decades of architectural achievement and vote for the project they believe stands above the rest.
Among those celebrated projects is the Laban Building, which received the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2003. Designed by internationally renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron, the building was recognised for its bold architectural vision and its pioneering approach to creating a space dedicated to artistic training, performance and experimentation.
More than twenty years after its opening, the Laban Building remains one of the most influential and recognisable cultural buildings in the UK. Its distinctive translucent façade, animated by vibrant colour panels and changing light, continues to captivate visitors while providing an inspiring environment for the next generation of dancers, musicians and artists. It has welcomed thousands of students, artists, audiences and community participants since opening, establishing itself not only as a landmark of contemporary architecture but also as a thriving centre for creativity and cultural exchange.
Its inclusion in the Stirling Prize at 30 celebrations is a reminder of the building’s enduring architectural significance and of the lasting impact that thoughtfully designed cultural spaces can have on the communities they serve.
Vote for the Laban Building
Voting in the Stirling Prize at 30 public poll is open until 30 September 2026, with the winning project set to be announced at the 2026 RIBA Stirling Prize ceremony on 15 October 2026.
