Trinity Laban violin teacher Roman Mints wins BBC Music Magazine Award

Roman Mints has been awarded the Premiere Award at the BBC Music Magazine Awards 2026 for his performance on Sun Triptych (Dobrinka Tabakova).

In April, the 21st annual BBC Music Magazine Award winners were announced in a ceremony at Kings Place in London. Bulgarian-British composer Dobrinka Tabakova’s Sun Triptych on ECM was awarded the Premiere Award. Alongside violinist Roman Mints the work features violist Maxim Rysanov, pianist Dasol Kim, cellist Kristina Blaumane and the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Mints has a long standing, collaborative working relationship with Tabakova. A previous album of works by Tabakova for ECM, featuring Mints, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Classical Compendium. Mints currently teaches violin at Trinity Laban and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Commenting on the award, Roman Mints said: “This project was unique in every sense. Not only because one of the tracks I recorded using multi-track, playing both hurdy-gurdy and violin, but also because it was recorded during the pandemic which involved a lot of effort and logistical problems. Nevertheless, the fruits of our collaboration with the wonderful musicians Dobrinka Tabakova and Kristine Blaumane (who also gave a masterclass at Trinity Laban this year) were noticed by BBC Music Mag and then the public voted for us.”
