DANC 360 Quantitative Analysis of Dance Injuries-Prevention and Recovery is a study abroad course for US undergraduate students, exploring concepts related to the field of Dance Science and its relationship to injury risk, prevention, and recovery.

Led by Professor Brooke Winder, California State University Long Beach and Dr. Catherine Haber, Trinity Laban, this two week programme is a credit-bearing course for US undergraduates. 

Course content will be taught at Trinity Laban in London, UK, with a focus on concepts related to the field of Dance Science and its relationship to injury risk, prevention, and recovery. The UK as a whole is a leading country when it comes to research and education in the field of Dance Science, and Trinity Laban in particular is a pioneering institution for Dance Science in the UK. Students on this study abroad course have the unique opportunity to experience the Trinity Laban lab facilities and equipment and to collaborate with Trinity Laban Dance Science faculty to learn concepts of wellness/injury screening, strength & conditioning, physiology, quantitative research methods, injury prevention, and dance science-informed movement technique.

This unique experience will also allow students to experience the rich art & culture within London, including dance/theatre performance and art museums.

DANC 360: Quantitative Analysis of Dance Injuries – Prevention and Recovery (3 units) fulfills Upper Division GE requirements, Area 2 or 5.

Prerequisite(s): Completion of GE Foundations; Completion of at least one GE Explorations course; Completion of at least 60 units; DANC 260  or consent of instructor.

Faculty Leader

Professor Brooke Winder, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS, Department of Dance

Dr. Brooke Winder is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the undergraduate Dance Science degree program in the Department of Dance at CSULB. She is also a licensed physical therapist, BASI-Certified Pilates instructor, and Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist with special expertise in dancer health, wellness, and injury risk-reduction. Dr. Winder regularly lectures nationally and internationally in dance medicine and science topics, has been published in several peer reviewed scholarly journals, and is a contributing author to several book chapters including a chapter in Dance Injuries: Reducing Risk and Maximizing Performance. She created this DANC 360: Quantitative Analysis of Injuries course and has taught it for many fall and spring semesters at CSULB. Dr. Winder is excited to offer this course as a short-term study abroad experience in London in collaboration with the incredible faculty at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Dance.

This course is ideal for Dance majors and minors, and Kinesiology majors with dance experience. It is open to any major who has dance experience, an interest in the scientific analysis of dance, and receives faculty approval to join the course (as well as staff, faculty, alumni, and community members on a space available basis). Faculty permission required.
