Trinity Laban String Ensemble featuring the Holtág Quartet
Friday 21 November 2025
Event details
Trinity Laban takes centre stage at the Queen’s House, Royal Museums Greenwich for a concert featuring the Trinity Laban String Ensemble and the Holtag Quartet. Conducted by Nic Pendlebury, repertoire will include an exciting mix of student commissions as well as a performance of Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.
Two of the most significant and well-loved works for string orchestra written by British composers in the 20th century provide the core of the Trinity Laban premier string ensemble’s programme. Both Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro and Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia contain prominent roles for a string quartet, here taken by the our postgraduate quartet, the Holtág String Quartet. Complimenting these iconic masterpieces the Ensemble plays a new work by Trinity Laban student Nisa Akday, commissioned specially for the Ensemble.
Anna Clyne’s Stride draws inspiration from Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No 8 commonly known as Sonata Pathétique. Clyne chose a few melodic, rhythmic and harmonic fragments from each of Beethoven’s three movements and developed these in the three corresponding sections of Stride. The title is taken from the octave leaps in the left hand of the original which are used as a compositional tool in the bass line to propel Stride along.
