Event details
“Sometimes I can be walking down the street, or riding a bus, and suddenly I see somebody who remind me of somebody I know back home, and I close my eyes and find myself thinking of the sea, or the taste of grafted mango, or the smell of saltfish frying, and then I come back to myself and open my eyes and realise where I am.” ― Caryl Phillips, In the Falling Snow
In the month that HMT Empire Windrush landed in Tilbury Docks on 22 June 1948, we celebrate the musical legacy of the Windrush Generation with an evening of music onboard The Theatreship in Canary Wharf.
Line up includes:
Trinity Laban BA (Hons) Music Performance and Industry Calypso Band with Marlon Hibbert AKA Marlon The Pannist
Luke Bacchus Quartet
BBC Young Jazz Musician 2022 finalist, pianist and composer Luke Bacchus is one of the most exciting emerging jazz musicians on the UK scene, as well as internationally. Born and raised in London to Guyanese parents, Bacchus musically explores his Caribbean heritage as one of his major sources of inspiration, taking in genres and rhythms well beyond what we conventionally hear about. The Luke Bacchus Quartet includes steel pan virtuoso Marlon Hibbert, winner of multiple awards who, at the age of just 17 years, founded the hugely successful Endurance Steel Orchestra which has developed in breadth and depth over the years he’s been leader.
