MA/MFA Choreography
Course details
Introduction
Are you in the early stages of your career or an experienced dance artist looking to move into choreography? Studying MA /MFA Choreography at Trinity Laban gives you the opportunity to engage with contemporary dance ideas and choreographic concepts to explore your artistic practice.
The course offers a stimulating environment to experiment and take risks as well as delving into interdisciplinary perspectives and collaborative practices within choreography.
You will undertake choreographic research and create work whilst collaborating with tutors, peers, dance students, composers, guest artists and production teams, to present your choreographic ideas.
Key features
You will spend most of your time in the studio, in both structured lessons and self-directed rehearsal, connecting practice and theory to develop creative outputs.
Modules include: Choreographic Methodologies, Interdisciplinary Exchange, Research and Development, and Research Lab. These are designed to support you to develop as an innovative, articulate and independent choreographer.
On both MA and MFA Choreography you will undertake an independent project. This is a self-directed module where you consolidate your choreographic perspectives and evidence your capacity to research, experiment, articulate, and reflect.

Detailed Information
MA Choreography is a one-year, full-time course from Sept – Sept. There is also an part time option over two years in which the course is divided into two intensive blocks. MFA Choreography is a two-year full-time course, it shares the first year with the MA and then includes a second year of in-depth research.
Learning happens through a variety of modes, including:
• Engaging with and exploring the practices and methodologies of other artists.
• Individual studio-based choreographic experimentation and dialogue with a tutor.
• Sharing work in progress with chaired question-and-answer forums with peers and tutors.
• Presentations of choreographic work.
• Lectures about practice-as-research practices, and the development of research proposals
• Workshops about the integration of other art forms in choreography including theatre design, film.
• Contextual reading and viewing of choreography
You will engage in critical dialogue around theories and practices of choreography, as well as developing your artistic practice through choreographic research and the development of choreographic work. You will engage in collaborative processes and develop your ability to articulate your practice.
