Help tradition find tomorrow

Legacy gifts are vitally important to Trinity Laban. Our history now goes back over 150 years and over the generations, legacies help guarantee our future. Any gift left to us in a will, big or small, will support our students for decades to come.

Let’s shape the future together

Do you remember the first time you experienced the performing arts?  How old were you and how did it make you feel?  What was your first experience of Trinity Laban?

The memories you have of Trinity Laban might be from when you studied here, taught here, found your life partner here, took part in a class, or simply enjoyed watching our students perform; we each have our unique stories of how Trinity Laban has enriched our lives.

Without training the performing artists of the future, how will generations to come experience those feelings?

By remembering Trinity Laban in your will, you can be at the forefront of securing the performing arts for years to come.

My scholarship has influenced not only my musical journey, but also my personal development. I truly feel that the person and musician I am today would not exist in the same way without this support and the opportunities it made possible for me.

There are honestly no words strong enough to fully express how grateful I am for the trust, generosity, and encouragement I have received throughout this time. Thank you for believing in young artists and for making it possible for students like me to continue pursuing our goals, dreams, and aspirations.

How to leave a gift in your Will

We know this is an important decision and we’re here to answer any questions you may have.

There are several ways to include Trinity Laban in your Will:

A share of your estate: Residuary Gift

This is a percentage – or all, if preferred – of your remaining estate, once all fees, outstanding costs and other gifts have been deducted.  This type of gift has the most flexibility as you do not have to quantify a sum or consider inflation when drawing up your will.

A fixed sum of money: Pecuniary Gift

This is a specified amount of money.  It is worth considering linking your legacy to the Retail Price Index. This will ensure that the value of the gift you make does not depreciate over time.

A postponed gift: Revisionary Gift

This allows you to leave assets to a loved one for the duration of their life. On their death, the remainder of your gift will come to Trinity Laban.

A specific gift

This is a gift of a particular item or asset such as property, shares, artworks or other valuables that you may wish to give. If you are considering this, please get in touch so that we can ensure we are able to accept your gift when the time comes.

Suggested wording for your Will:

‘I give [specified percentage of my residuary estate] OR [specific sum in words and figures] to Trinity Laban or King Charles Court, Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, London SE10 9JF, registered charity number 309998.  It is my wish without creating a binding obligation to Trinity Laban that this gift be used for [the purpose].  I declare that the receipt of an authorised officer of Trinity Laban shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my Executors.’

Writing or amending your Will

Whether you are writing a Will for the first time or updating one, adding a gift to Trinity Laban can be simple. If you already have a Will, you may not need to rewrite it as a solicitor can add a short amendment, called a codicil.  If adding a codicil to your will, remember that to be valid it must still be signed and witnessed.

For major changes to a Will, it is advisable to make a new will and revoke the old one.

We always suggest you speak to your solicitor for formal legal or financial adviser about Will making or estate planning.

Inheritance tax benefits

Leaving a legacy is a meaningful way to support Trinity Laban and because we are a registered charity (no 309998) it may also reduce the tax burden on your loved ones.

A gift in your Will to Trinity Laban is a charitable donation and is therefore exempt from inheritance tax. If you leave 10% or more of your estate to charity, your estate may also qualify for a reduced rate of inheritance tax: 36% instead of the standard 40%.

We encourage you to speak with a solicitor or financial adviser to adviser to explore your options.

US and global supporters

For US Taxpayers, charitable gifts can be made to the British Schools and Universities Foundation, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organisation, recognised by the US Internal Revenue Service.   Please ensure that you make it clear that Trinity Laban is the favoured organisation to receive your gift.

For global supporters, please consult with your solicitor or financial advisor to discuss the most tax efficient way to leave a gift in your Will to Trinity Laban as laws vary from country to country.

Why I’m giving to Trinity Laban…

My initial involvement with Trinity Laban was as a scholarship provider. As a former music student myself in the 1980s, before the days of student loans and tuition costs, I recognised how incredibly difficult it is for many youngsters today to afford to put themselves through college, especially at a leading conservatoire based in London, and that made me want to help. Watching those students develop, mature and go on to build successful careers in music and dance has been a joy, and I’m constantly amazed at their ability when they graduate.
To be able to further my support of Trinity Laban with a legacy donation, which will help to provide funding for students for many years to come, is especially important to me.

Rob Ford, Trinity Laban supporter

I have two main reasons for supporting Trinity Laban by leaving a legacy.

The first reason is to play a small part showing encouragement for the huge range of passions, skills and artistry in the students at Trinity Laban..

These qualities are honed by both the teaching provided and by the ethos of adventure, creativity and individuality. Working in the arts is tough and it seems to me that Trinity Laban fires imagination and gives opportunities for trying new ideas, as well as prompting the highest of professional standards.

The second reason is that this amazing quality comes at a high price. When I was a student at Trinity College of Music in the 1970s, I had my fees paid, along with a maintenance grant from my local education authority. I would like to help future students have less anxiety about the expense of pursuing advanced studies.

Leaving a legacy will enable others to have the opportunities that I had.

I wonder what your reasons might be for supporting Trinity Laban financially. I hope we can all play our parts to enable the amazing culture here led by the students, nurtured by staff, to spread beyond these walls. The arts have a unique role to play in making us human and humane.
