Fred was born in Hamburg (1967), arrived in London in 1989 and stayed for 5 consecutive years when he concentrated on a career as a dancer working for Kim Brandstrup, Aletta Colins, Mathew Bourne (creation of ‘The Nutcracker’) and London Contemporary Dance Theatre. From 1994 he lived six years abroad, dancing for Ballet Preljocaj (F), Carte Blanche (Norway), Alias (Geneva), Nomads (CH)and BILL T Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Cie in N.Y.C. where he was also a company member of Mathew Bourne’s first Broadway Season with Swanlake (1998/99).

Back in Britain, from the year 2000, he danced for RADC, Random Dance/Wayne McGregor, Michael Clark, DV8/Lloyd Newson, Frauke Requard and has performed in various productions on the stages of Britain’s four leading Opera houses: Opera North, ENO, ROH and Glyndbourne. Fred has completed 5 collaborative projects with site specific dance maker Susanne Thomas (‘7sisters’), the last one being produced by English National Ballet for the Olympics in 2012 in which he danced, co-choreographed and assisted. Over the years, Fred has participated as a performer in productions of Britain’s major Opera Houses (Opera North, ENO, ROH and Glyndebourne). He is part of the collective ‘Tanztheater Global Berlin’ with whom he has co-created 4 video dance productions, the past three taking place on Cap Verdien Island/Africa. In 2012 performed with and for Turner Price winner Martin Creed at the modern Institute of Art, Chicago and alongside Brad Pitt in WWZ. In 2013 he performed in the Tate Tanks in collaboration with artist Carlos Motta and director Matthias Sperling as well as staring in the 2013/14 season of Punch Drunk’s London production ‘the drowned man’ in the role of’ the producer’.

Qualifications / Educational Background

  • 6  months internship as a caretaker (workshop assistant for woodcraft, farming, literature and dancing) for adults with severe special needs (physical and mental) in Geneva-CH -1986
  • 5 months practical seminar in Eurythmics, sociological studies of anthroposophical  philosophy (Rudolf Steiner) at Witthues, Sylt-Germany -1987
  • Art and Art history at 'Hochschule der Kuenste' Berlin- 1987-89
  • B.A. Honours in dance LCDS validated by the University of Kent  1992
  • Diploma in Holistic Massage Therapy, Morley College, London 2007 (subsequent massage therapist practitioner at Neal's Yard Remedies, Covent Garden, 07/08)
  • B.A. certificate and M.A. in 'Performance, Design and Practice' Central St Martins, school of the Arts, London 2009/10

Teaching Experience

Fred has taught dance, dance related classes as well as repertoire for most of the companies he has worked for, notably Ballet Preljocaj (F), Random/Wayne Mc Gregor and London Contemporary Dance Theatre (GB), Tanztheater Global (Ger). As a free-lance teacher abroad Fred has been invited by:

In the U.K. he has taught at/for:

Central school of Ballet; Urdgang dance Academy; Tring; Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, Henry Oguike; ' Associated studios' for singers and actors, The Place (Young Place under Iris Tomlinson, CAT 2007-09, Evening classes 2000-2010); CAT Birmingham 2013, LCDS until 2012 for Contemporary technique/ Ballet. In 2008 Fred set Stephen Petronio's 'strange attractor' for BA3 students at the Robin Howard Theatre.  Fred co-conducted a module for 'work placement' for BA3 at University of East London, he is on the faculty of LSC since 2010 and still teaches company class for 'New adventures' and 'Ballet Preljocaj'.

Fred has been a member of staff at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance since 2006 primarily as a teacher for Cunningham Technique for undergraduate, post graduate and OYP students. He taught Ballet as part of the Summer school in 2009 & 2010. More recently Fred has developed a hybrid technique class 'pure Cunningham' with contemporary approaches. At Trinity Laban he has led or co-led modules such as:

  • 'Dance as Performance' - OYP
  • 'Resourcing Performance' - BA2
  • 'Performance Project' - BA1

He has also given lectures in career advice for BA3, as well as acting as a tutor/mentor for their Independent Projects.
